VPN stopped working after an iOS update? Here's the fix (incl. iOS 27 beta)

نُشر في 2026-07-25 · بقلم FREE VPN FAST Team · 4 دقيقة قراءة

Quick answer: iOS updates — especially major ones — routinely invalidate the VPN configuration profile stored in Settings, while the app itself looks untouched. The fix that works in most cases: delete the VPN profile (Settings → General → VPN & Device Management), reinstall the VPN app, and re-grant the permission when iOS asks. Total time: about two minutes.

Why updates break VPNs specifically

A VPN on iOS is two pieces: the app you see, and a Network Extension registered with the system. iOS updates rewrite system networking — and the extension's stored state can end up referencing frameworks that moved. The app launches fine, the Connect button animates, and the tunnel silently never comes up. That mismatch is why "worked yesterday, broke after updating" is the single most common VPN support ticket every September.

The 3-step fix

  1. Delete the stale profile. Settings → General → VPN & Device Management → VPN → ⓘ next to your VPN → Delete VPN.
  2. Reinstall the app. Delete it fully, reinstall from the App Store. This forces the network extension to re-register against the new iOS.
  3. Re-grant the permission. On first launch, iOS asks to add a VPN configuration — tap Allow and confirm. Miss this dialog and nothing works.

Then verify the tunnel actually protects you with the 2-minute, 5-test check. If it still won't connect, the broader 9-fix connection guide covers the rarer causes — Screen Time locks, competing profiles, clock drift, networks that block VPNs.

Updating soon? Do it in this order

  • Update the VPN app first, then iOS. Developers ship compatibility updates ahead of public iOS releases; grabbing the new app version before the OS reduces the mismatch window to zero for most people.
  • After updating, open the VPN app once before you rely on it. If the profile needs re-registering, the app will re-prompt — better at home than on airport Wi-Fi.

Notes for iOS 27 beta users

Betas are where VPN breakage clusters. Three honest notes:

  • Network Extension behavior changes between beta builds; a VPN that fails on beta 3 often just works on beta 4. Re-test before filing tickets.
  • The profile-reset fix above resolves most beta failures too, but may need repeating after each beta build.
  • If a beta breaks your VPN entirely and you depend on it, that's the argument for not running betas on your main phone — no VPN vendor can patch around an OS bug faster than Apple fixes it.

We track each iOS release against FREE VPN FAST before the public rollout, and same-day compatibility is part of why the app leans on WireGuard and the standard Network Extension APIs rather than exotic hooks. If an update ever does break you: [email protected], with your iOS version — those reports are how issues get caught within hours of a release.
