Why is my VPN slow? 8 fixes that actually work

Every VPN adds some overhead: your traffic makes an extra hop and gets encrypted along the way. On a healthy setup that costs a few percent — not the "why is this page taking ten seconds" experience that sends people searching for this article.

If your VPN feels slow, work through this list in order. It's sorted by how often each one turns out to be the culprit.

1. You're connected to a distant server

The #1 cause by a wide margin. Every kilometer between you and the VPN server adds latency, and crossing an ocean adds a lot.

Fix: connect to the nearest server that does what you need. If you don't need a specific country, use the auto-select option — it picks by latency. If you need a specific country for streaming, that's the cost of the feature; everything else should still go through a nearby server (see split tunneling, below).

2. The server you picked is busy

Popular locations get crowded at peak hours. Same country ≠ same performance.

Fix: switch to a different server in the same country, or just disconnect and reconnect — most VPNs (ours included) will land you on a less-loaded node.

3. Your base connection is the bottleneck

A VPN can't make bad Wi-Fi good. Before blaming the tunnel, test without it.

Fix: run a speed test with the VPN off. If you're getting 5 Mbps bare, you'll get at most 5 Mbps tunneled. Move closer to the router, or switch between Wi-Fi and cellular and keep whichever is faster.

4. You're on the wrong protocol

Protocols matter. WireGuard and IKEv2 are fast and light; OpenVPN over TCP is robust but noticeably slower, especially on lossy mobile networks.

Fix: in the app settings, prefer WireGuard (or "automatic"). Only use TCP-based fallbacks when a restrictive network blocks everything else.

5. Obfuscation is on but you don't need it

Traffic obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as ordinary HTTPS — great for restrictive networks, but the extra wrapping costs speed.

Fix: if you're on a normal home or cellular network, turn obfuscation off. Save it for networks that actually block VPNs.

6. Battery saver is throttling the tunnel

iOS Low Power Mode and some "data saver" settings deprioritize background network activity, which can include the VPN process.

Fix: if speeds crater when your battery is low, that's the correlation. Charge up or disable Low Power Mode and re-test.

7. Your DNS is slow, not your VPN

Pages "feel" slow when name resolution is slow, even if raw bandwidth is fine. A distant or overloaded resolver adds a delay to every new site you visit.

Fix: use the VPN's own DNS (default in our app). Run our DNS leak test — it doubles as a check that the resolver answering you is the one your VPN intends.

8. Split tunneling can rescue the exceptions

Sometimes one app is the whole problem — a video call service that hates the extra hop, a game that needs the lowest possible ping.

Fix: with split tunneling (Premium), route just that app outside the tunnel and keep the VPN for everything else. Privacy where it matters, raw speed where it counts.

The quick diagnostic, in one paragraph

Speed test without VPN → establishes your ceiling. Speed test with VPN on the nearest server → healthy setups lose under ~10%. Big gap? Switch servers (#2), check protocol (#4), disable obfuscation (#5). Still slow at odd hours only? Server load. Slow everywhere including without the VPN? Your connection, not the tunnel.
