Can a Wi-Fi owner see your browsing history? What they see with and without a VPN

Quick answer: yes — the owner of a Wi-Fi network (home, work, school, hotel, cafe) can see every website domain you visit, when, and how much data you transfer, even on HTTPS. They cannot see the exact pages or what you typed. With a VPN on, they see only that you're connected to a VPN — domains, timing patterns, and destinations all disappear into one encrypted stream.

What the Wi-Fi owner sees without a VPN

HTTPS encrypts the contents of your traffic — pages, passwords, messages. What it does not hide is the metadata, which the network sees by default:

  • Every domain you visit — via DNS queries and the TLS handshake. clinic-name.com, dating-app.com, jobsearch.com: the sites themselves tell a story, no page contents needed.
  • When and for how long — timestamps of every connection, session lengths, whether you're online at 3am.
  • How much data — enough to distinguish video calls from browsing from downloads.
  • Your device — name, manufacturer, and often the person it belongs to (the captive portal you signed into, or simply "whose iPhone joined at 9:02").

On a home router this data usually evaporates unless someone set up logging. On corporate, school, and hotel networks, logging is standard practice and retention can be long.

Can the Wi-Fi owner see my search history?

Your search terms — no, those travel inside HTTPS. That you visited google.com at 11:14pm and then spent forty minutes on webmd.com — yes. For most people the domain trail is the sensitive part.

Can my employer see what I do on company Wi-Fi?

Everything above, plus more: employers commonly run enterprise firewalls that log per-device domain histories, and on company-managed devices they can go further — installed root certificates allow decrypting HTTPS itself.
